Just fluttering by with a few mixed media scrapbooking ideas to try using the butterfly kits from Queen & Co. Mixed media is just what it sounds like—mixing various mediums. It’s a fun way to add interest and texture to a paper project. The mediums I use on this page are acrylic paint, hybrid stamping ink, ink, spray ink, thread, toppings, washi tape, and watercolor paint.
WATERCOLOR
Wanting a soft pattern to go with the pretty butterfly die, I applied streaks of watercolor to mixed media paper. I then die cut the paper and stamped the title of my page—Let your dreams take flight.
I painted more paper in the same fashion and used it to cut additional butterflies out.
The butterfly wings, when turned, look a bit like whimsical flowers, so I planted a small garden of them in the corner of my page. The stems are washi tape.
I also my painted paper as journaling strips and another page border (along the top and bottom).
SPRAY INK
A few squirts of different spray ink gave me another background.
I die cut a couple of butterflies from this piece as well.
WASHI
Using Queen’s pretty Pin Stripe Glitter Tape, I created a textured border by pleating the tape, layering it some, and stitching using my sewing machine.
ACRYLIC PAINT
Did you know you can turn your dies into stamps with just a bit of acrylic paint. It won’t be a crisp impression, but I didn’t need that with this style of page, so the rough outline did the trick.
NOTE: Make sure you rinse your die clean with water immediately following the stamping.
Once the paint dried, I used the inside foam butterfly shape and more of my painted paper to give the butterfly some added detail.
SHAKERS
Toppings are an excellent mixed media option. I used them to create two shaker butterflies on my layout.
BUTTERFLY BONUS
I layered two butterflies to give the page some extra lift.
Since this layout is about my five-year-old’s dream of being a “taxti car driver,” I didn’t hesitate to have fun with it… a whimsical design to support a lighthearted story. Whatever is on your list to scrapbook next, I hope this page has given you an idea or two to try.
MIXED MEDIA CARDS
Since your supplies are already out, you might as well create a couple of quick mixed media cards while you’re at it. The techniques are the same, making these super fast to assemble using your scraps.
Cheers!
